Their Lives

The narratives below memorialize the lives of four enslaved people who worked or lived at The University of Alabama These detailed accounts allow us to better understand the breadth of experiences enslaved workers endured. Moses was owned by UA. Lydia was enslaved by President Basil Manly and his wife, Sarah. Peter was hired by UA; his enslaver was Isabel Pratt. Binkey was born in the President's Mansion on campus. With the goal of centering the enslaved person fully, Task Force members wrote these entries based on the source material from the "Their Names" page and the scholarly works that can be found by clicking on the "Further Reading" tab.  As with the database entries, readers should proceed with caution. Some of the material may be distressing or difficult to read. We hope to memorialize more individuals as this project progresses.
