"The President reported that he had hired Anderson, a servant belonging to Mrs. Eliza C. Perkins, to wait on dormitories on the same terms as last year, viz $10 a month. The same officer announced that he would take the earliest measures to obtain another servant, or a portion of the services of some one in the vicinity."

"Mrs E. L. Perkins, owner of servant who has been employed at the university this year agrees to the following terms of price – viz to $9 per month for said servant including the whole time he has been in our employ. For 4 months at $12 she has received $48. At the new rate, there will be $6 due on the third of August – i.e. $54-$48. After that regularly $9 all to be paid on the third of every month till the end of the year."

"Mrs Perkins having alleged that she did not understand the bargain for servt hire, as above, but that she thought she was to receive $9 per month for the residue of his time, over & independent of the amount already received; the matter was submitted to the faculty at their meeting Sept 29.
It was agreed that, as the difference between her understanding and mine wd amt to $12 The faculty would pay half that difference. Accordingly, on Sat. Sept 30 I wrote Mrs Perkins, offering to pay her on Tuesday Oct 3 the sum of $30 being $24 for hire, and $6 for compromise. i.e. 8x9=72 add $6 make $78; of which she had recd $48 due now 30. She refuses to give me a receipt in full to Oct 3 – and I have sent her word, to take her servt if she can do better."
