"This morn. at 12 ½ we were roused by the call of Levi, saying that Martha (our servt woman) is sick. Wife found her in a spasm, as she had been about 3 months ago. Her case was then judged by Dr. Searcy to be an affection of the heart. She recovered in a few days, from that attack; & seemed to be in usual health. Last evening she spoke of chilliness but continued at work till bed-time about her own sewing. - Wife gave her an emetic (ipecac) but sent off for Dr. Searcy. He was sick & could not come; We then sent for Dr. Billingslea: before he arrived at ¼ before 2. she died. She seemed conscious, a while; took the emetic; and threw off a quantity of mucus froth, quite offensive: But went off quite suddenly & unconscious. - She leaves a little son, named, William.
'In such an hour as ye think not, the son of Man cometh.'
The body was taken to the Lecture Room followed by a concourse from the city, & her brothers and sister, who came up from the plantation. Charles & I performed funeral service; & went to the grave, & saw her buried."

"This evening at 8 o’clock, my servant, Ben and Mary with their two children, Margaret and Harriet left Tuskaloosa for Richmond Virginia, - under the charge of Mr. R. C. McLester of North-Port. They are intended for the use and service of my son Basil, and his family; and are to be held by him or them, together with Martha, a servant already received out of my portion of the estate of L. Rudolph Senior which said servant is now in their care in Richmond subject to future account in the distribution of my estate. -
I mean, by this, that when my estate is to be divided among my heirs, these negros with all their issue are to be thrown into the common mass of my property, - and my children or their representation must take their equitable share, - as if no distribution had been previously made."
