Between December 9, 1863 and January 18, 1864, the University of Alabama hired out the labor of thirty-eight enslaved individuals to build fortifications on the campus in preparation for Union troop arrival. The contract terms for this enslaved individual's labor were as follows: One dollar per day labored for a total of $1.
