"The University of Alabama has this day hired from John J. Ormond for the coming year the following slaves –Tom a Carpenter and Baker a plaisterer and bricklayer at two thousand and fifty dollars each and Jim a Carpenter at one hundred and fifty dollars all to be furnished the customary winter and summer clothing and the boy Jim as far as practicable to be kept at work at his house
In witness [unreadable] of the Superintendent of the University hereto sets his hand this 1st day of January 1864
