"This afternoon, a little before 2 o’clock, our old man Jack died. His complaint was bilious Pneumonia – sick about a week – he had had a cough most of the winter. He was an African, a member of the Methodist Church – honest & faithful – did as much & as well as he knew how. He was buried in the university burial ground."
