"Unty. Of Ala.
Dec. 31, 1862
Mrs. A. G. Stade
My Dear Madam
Your servant Clem. Has been wholly incapacitated for work since the middle of October. It is, I believe, the universal custom to make a deduction of wages for such protracted sickness.
Besides, you claim the hire during Xmas week. The servants themselves also claim it, and supposing that you would recognize the legitimacy of the payment I have given Ned his wages for the holidays. This, however, is a small matter, & if you require it, I will also pay it to you.
I wished a few days ago to hire Ned – but he did not wish to stay at the Mess Hall, & so have made other arrangements."
